Julie Watrous
Fiber / Wearable Art

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Julie enjoys the process of taking a mixture of seemingly unrelated elements and assembling them to create not just an interesting piece of art, but one that can be worn.  She draws her inspirations from printed cloth purchased on travels throughout the US, as well as Africa, New Zealand, and Indonesia.  She likes to work with fabric that already has color and design, combining them in unusual ways and incorporating beads, metal, plastic, and trims.  She also creates texture in fabrics through tucking, quilting, painting, and layering sheers over solids.  Julie produces short and long jackets, coats and vests.

“I have enjoyed sewing since I was a young girl.  At this point in my life, my wearable art endeavor is a much-loved hobby that I fit in around my family and my government job as a VA Healthcare Inspector.  People often ask me how I find the time to sew, and I respond that we can always find time for those things we love to do.”
