Wood – Turned Bowls
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Richard Terasaki exhibits woodturnings in hollow forms such as bowls, ollas, and vases. His objective is to craft wood objects that are aesthetic with regard to form and figure (grain). Southwest Native-American pottery and Japanese ceramics influence his approach to form. Favorite wood species are walnut, black cherry, cocobolo, olive, macassar ebony, box elder, and maple with spalt and grain such as burl, quilt, and bird's eye.
Terasaki learned woodcraft from his father at an early age and began wood turning after retiring from a career in aerospace engineering. He is a 40 year resident of Rolling Hills Estates and donates proceeds of his sales to Doctors without Borders.
