ARTIST STATEMENT:

My world of art revolves around my life’s experiences and challenges. Art has a very special place in my life. I read a story about the healing powers of art and I decided to take an art class in order to deal with life’s challenges. The class helped me to bridge sadness into happiness. I love the personal involvement of expression. All emotions are tied up in my painting world. I try to paint every day and I find that my techniques are becoming more sophisticated and my paintings are more complex.

I love to see what creations I can develop. Much of my work is contemporary. Color variations will share a mood and different shapes and linear design will decide my path for a unique piece of artwork. Many artists influence my work. My favorite artist is Rufino Tamayo. I love to go to the different museums to see his actual work. He was so inventive with his own paper creations and yet his work had such style and purpose. I love to read his books and to learn from him. I have a mentor that I will always cherish, my grandmother, Mrs. Edith Sherman. She was my inspiration, my teacher and my guide. I used to love to go to her studio and to see all of the work that she did. Everyday she would paint or sculpt another treasure. As a child I did not realize the value of her artwork. Today I wish that I would have listened and learned more from her.

Picasso said, “Every child is an artist.” How true this is. Once we are adults we struggle to return to a child’s world so that we can free ourselves from the demands and confusions of every day life. Art is such a gift and one that will always be a challenge. I know that I have so much to learn and each and everyday is better because I want to develop my art into a realm of the unknown. My goal is to paint, express and share works of art that are free of pollution, trauma and prejudice. Developing my own style is an important challenge. Many days I’m frustrated and disappointed with my work, though some days I succeed. These are my happy days and I always want to celebrate and enjoy the times of success because I know that they are far and few between.

The days of success only happen after many culminations of trial and error. The museums, libraries, teachers and students are my inspiration and guides. Life is so fragile. I want to give the gallery my best. I’m sharing my soul and my heart with my works of art. Whether you like my work or not is not important. What is important is the fact that my work speaks to you and you take the time to stop, look and listen.
